Thousands of Red Shirts Rally Around Bangkok

Flouting a ban on their using 11 key roads, thousands of Red Shirt protesters mounted processions throughout Thailand’s capital city. Here is a series of photographs of one group streaming down Phaholyothin Road, near Soi Ari in northern Bangkok. While this procession was passing, a grenade was fired into the compound of the Democrat Party headquarters less than two kilometres away. The grenade hit a police car containing tear gas and other anti-riot gear but no injuries were reported.

Head of the procession arrives.

The leading group of motorcycles.

The first bunch disappears under Ari BTS station.

As has been the case throughout most of this year's rally, there was a strong party mood.

All smiles on a Red Shirt Tuk Tuk.

Traffic was not unduly impeded. If anything, it was still better than on most holiday afternoons.

Thais love to ham it up for the camera.

Some of the stragglers behind the main bunch.

Despite what must be a hot and tiring trip around Bangkok, most still provide plenty of smiles and positive energy.

Across the street from Shinawatra Tower 2, red fabric is hung prominently outside police apartments.

All told, this one big group of protesters took more than five minutes to pass by.

  3. I hope some compromise suitable to both the Red Shirts and Yellow Shirts will be reach soon. This horrible violence needs to stop for stability and peace to return to Thailand.
